About

About atsu corp.

atsu is a Seattle-based, venture- and angel-backed startup leveraging machine learning, systems engineering, and cloud infrastructure to optimize digital production - or, as we might say, building machines to optimize the machines. Our team draws on veteran product, infrastructure, and cloud management talent from Isilon Systems, thePlatform, and Comcast — combined with modern data science expertise of UW-educated physicists.

The atsu crew: Hot, in a NW, post-grunge sort of way.

Our team

Nick Kirsch

president and founder

Previously, Nick spent thirteen years building, tweaking, and shipping Isilon’s OneFS distributed file-system from 2002-2015. After leaving EMC, where he was the CTO of the Emerging Technology Division, he actively explored the intersection of machine learning and IT systems, learning from great friends at Madrona Venture Group, the University of Washington, Turi, and Igneous Systems. Nick holds undergraduate degrees in mathematics and computer science from the University of Puget Sound and a master's degree in computer science from the University of Washington.

Isaac Backus

data scientist and co-founder

Isaac is a full stack data scientist with extensive experience gathering data, generating data from simulation, analyzing data, coding and developing data analysis pipelines and packages. He has extended experience in machine learning and statistical modelling, developing physics simulations, optimizations, statistical analysis and data science methods, and software packages for a variety of physical systems; from bacteria to neutron stars and protoplanetary disks. Isaac holds bachelor's degrees in physics and philosophy from the University of Vermont and a Ph.D. in computational astrophysics from the University of Washington.

TQ Berg

systems software engineer and co-founder

TQ has an insatiable desire for increasing efficiencies in engineering processes, maximizing talent of software teams with a selfless approach, and a relentless pursuit of readable code. Prior to joining atsu, he honed his skills at thePlatform, a Seattle startup where he managed and engineered OTT & IPTV solutions for thePlatform’s pro-services division. thePlatform was acquired by Comcast in 2006. TQ holds a B.S. degree from The Evergreen State College.

Seth Thompson

systems software engineer and co-founder

Seth is an experienced systems integration engineer. Prior to joining atsu, Seth worked at thePlatform, a startup acquired by Comcast. Seth’s primary focus was building, testing, and maintaining custom solutions to address specific customer needs as well as augmenting core product teams to implement key features to beat strategic customer deadlines. Prior to thePlatform, Seth worked for Hewlett Packard Enterprise Services as one of the primary maintenance developers supporting patient care applications for the US Dept of Veteran Affairs hospital systems. Seth holds a B.S. in information technology from the University of Central Florida.

Livia Jobson

executive and co-founder

Livia served as director of software product management at Impinj, and later as senior director of customer success, she oversaw software product management and managed key customer engagements. Prior to Impinj, she was responsible for protocols product management for OneFS at Dell EMC Isilon. Livia is a graduate of the University of Washington, where she studied communication and social sciences.

Tomasz Sakrejda

data scientist and co-founder

Prior to atsu, Tomasz had been involved in cutting edge quantum computing research, including data analysis, model creation and selection. He comes to atsu with experience in experimental design, statistical data analysis, as well as graduate-level CS coursework in machine learning. Tomasz earned his undergraduate degree in physics at the University of California, Berkley, and holds a Ph.D in physics from the University of Washington.

Matthias Smith

data scientist

Matthias has extensive background in high precision experimental particle physics where he worked on data acquisition systems, data pipelining, data analysis, physical models, and using simulations to stress test algorithmic analytical methods. Matthias is experienced with various machine learning techniques, knowledge of the Python domain of machine learning frameworks, as well as with data processing and building data flows. Matthias earned a B.S. in engineering physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He holds a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Washington.
